Flood Damage and Recovery: Debris removal on Route H to begin soon

AGENCY, Mo. – Flooding in Buchanan County causes the closure of Route H in Agency. When waters recede there is often sediment and debris left behind. This time, however, with recent flooding, the debris was excessive and will need removal by a contractor. That project is slated to being next week with contractors from H.B. Construction, Inc. of Platte, City, working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, under an emergency flooding contract.

The contractor will begin work Wednesday, Sept. 11. Work will be done under a single-lane closure with flaggers directing motorists through the work zone. Crews plan to work daylight hours, Monday through Thursday. Occasional work Friday through Sunday may be necessary to complete the project on tim. All work is scheduled to be complete by Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2019, weather permitting.

This is one of several emergency contracts which have already been awarded for flooding repair.

Previously awarded:

  • U.S. Route 159 (Holt County) debris removal and roadway and shoulder repairs from one mile east of Route P near Fortescue to the Missouri River Bridge (crews began work April 29)
  • U.S. Route 136 (Atchison County) debris removal and roadway and shoulder repairs from Interstate 29 to the Missouri River Bridge
  • Route 118 (Holt County) debris removal and roadway and shoulder repairs from Route 111 to the bridge over Little Tarkio Creek
  • U.S. Route 159 (Holt County) bridge replacement of the Little Tarkio Creek Bridge near Fortescue
  • Route A (Gentry County) bridge repair at the Grand River Bridge

Additonal emergency contracts will follow on additional routes as needed.

Northwest Missouri flooding began in March 2019 and the damage it inflicted on the region’s infrastructure has been felt by communities along the Missouri River basin. In some places, water remains over roadways months later. As floodwaters recede, damage to roadways, bridges, residual debris, hazardous materials and drainage issues have been left in their wake and must be addressed so full mobility may be restored across the region.
