Traffic Shifts Along Northbound I-470/Route 291 over I-70 This Weekend

JACKSON COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation will have various traffic shifts along the northbound I-470/Route 291 bridges over Little Blue River, U.S. 40, and I-70 beginning on Saturday, Sept. 22, until approximately the end of the day on Monday, Sept. 24. These shifts in traffic are a part of the bridge rehabilitation work happening in the area. All work is weather permitting.

  • Beginning at 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22, crews will begin traffic operations ahead of the traffic shift.
  • Starting at 6 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, until approximately Monday, Sept. 24, motorists should expect various lane shifts along northbound I-470/Route 291 over the Little Blue River, U.S. 40, and I-70 as crews begin to shift traffic to the currently closed outside lane and shoulder.
  • The contractor will also be closing the ramp from U.S. 40 to northbound I-470/Route 291 temporarily on the morning of Sunday, Sept. 23, in order to make this switch.  This is estimated to last from 8 a.m. until approximately noon.
  • Crews will still be conducting bridge work within the closed inside lane but northbound I-470/Route 291 will have two open lanes for traffic once the traffic shift is completed.
  • Once the traffic shift is complete, crews will open the loop ramp from northbound I-470/Route 291 to westbound I-70.

Use the zipper merge and take turns at the merge points.  This is all part of the final phase of an extensive bridge rehabilitation project along I-470 that began in spring 2017. Learn more about the project here. Please remember that all work zones are NO PHONE zones. Buckle up. Phone down. Arrive Alive.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
