MoDOTHolds Public Hearing to Discuss Improvements to Route 25 and South Elementary School

SIKESTON-The Missouri Department of Transportation held a public hearing on Thursday, Oct. 1 to discuss improvements to Route 25 and South Elementary School in Jackson.  The hearing was held from 4 to 7 p.m. at South Elementary School library, 1701 S. Hope St.

The meeting will have an open-house format, so visitors can stop by to talk one-on-one with a member of the project team anytime between 4 and 7 p.m.  No formal presentation will be given.

The project will involve widening Route 25 to provide turn lanes, improving the intersection at Route 25 and School Lane, adding signals and lighting, and working to reduce congestion on the school property.

"Currently, there are multiple factors contributing to the congestion at South Elementary School," said Project Manager Andy Meyer.  "But through a partnership with the City of Jackson and Jackson R-2 School District these issues can be resolved."

The project construction is estimated to cost approximately $750,000.  MoDOT plans to cover all engineering costs, with the city absorbing utility relocation costs.  Jackson R-2 School District and New McKendree United Methodist Church will contribute easements.

"The proposed plan includes improvements that can be delivered quickly," Meyer said.  "If the project is awarded in April 2010 and the necessary easements are acquired, work could be completed before school begins in August 2010."
