Leadership Coins

On September 13, 2017, Director Patrick McKenna implemented the “Leadership in Action,” a peer-to-peer program that allowed MoDOT employees to recognize a co-worker based on that person’s leadership in living the department’s core values in areas of safety, service and stability.

Employees can receive the leadership coin from anyone who currently holds one. Recipients have been awarded coins in both formal ceremonies and private exchange and are recognized for showcasing preferred employee qualities that make a difference for the citizens of Missouri. Coin holders are then encouraged to bestow the coin upon another who exhibits those exemplary attributes to keep the coin in circulation.

There are currently 200 coins in rotation. After changing hands ten times, a coin is “retired” and another coin is introduced to take its place.

Most employees say that, though they are honored to receive the token of leadership, they’re even happier having the chance to pass it on to another exemplary employee.
