Citizen’s Guide to Transportation Funding

Transportation funding can be a difficult subject for the average citizen to comprehend. Missourians are generally unaware of how much they pay for transportation and the value they receive from their investment.

A Citizen’s Guide to Transportation Funding in Missouri uses simple but precise language to explain to Missouri residents how transportation funding works, including how funds are distributed and invested across the state. It also provides information on high priority, unfunded needs and demonstrates MoDOT’s commitment to a high standard of public accountability.

In text and graphs, the Citizen’s Guide breaks down where every cent of  the department’s funding comes from, including state taxes, gas taxes, vehicle registration, federal revenue and Missouri general revenue. That information is cross referenced with information from other states to show Missouri’s standing. Though Missouri ranks seventh in highway miles served, it is 46th in revenue per miles.

The guide then proceeds to show where and how the revenue dollars are spent on road and bridge construction, maintenance, repair, safety and administration.

Excerpts from the Citizen’s Guide have been well received when presented to groups throughout the state.
