Construction begins and road closure

The contract states the contractor may begin work as early as Oct. 15, 2020. The contractor closed the road to all traffic on Dec. 7, 2020.

The bridge construction began and a significant amount of dirt was placed at the site. Construction was paused to allow this dirt to settle and compact before construction on the new bridge can continue. Construction is set to resume May 17, 2021.

The planned, signed detour routes are noted below.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why is MoDOT closing the road during construction?

A. Closing the road during the bridge replacement saves taxpayer money by allowing the contractor to work more efficiently. This will result in a shorter construction period.

Q. How long will the road be closed?

The road is scheduled to reopen in early to mid-August 2021. By contract, the contractor has 210 calendar days in which to complete the work.

Q. What is the planned detour?

There are two signed detours:

  • North: Route 139 to Route H to U.S. Route 65 to U.S. Route 36 to Route 5 to Route 139
  • South: Route 139 to U.S. Route 24 to Route 11 to Route CC to Route E to Route 139
  • See both routes above

Q. Why not build a bypass?

Based on the cost/benefit ration, building a bypass would not be a prudent use of taxpayer funds. A bypass could also have negative impacts and disruption to private property.

Q. Who can I contact if I have further questions?
