Autonomous Truck-Mounted Attenuators and Flagger Vehicles

MoDOT’s commitment to safety applies equally to members of its work crew as it does to the general public. In 2012, MoDOT implemented use of rear-mounted attenuators because its work zone vehicles tend to be struck from behind. Attenuators are like giant, crushable shock absorbers which absorb momentum and reduce the force of the impact. Damage to drivers and vehicles involved is lessened.

Sometimes, drivers walk away from these crashes. As they do so, MoDOT is able to call out for another attenuator and continue using the same truck.
