Public Hearing Set for June 27

MoDOT is hosting an open-house design public hearing on Thursday June 27, 2019 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the LaMont Elementary School to gather public input about intersection improvements at U.S. Highway 50 and Route 127. RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/351779542358008/

What is MoDOT doing on this project? 

 Highway 50 has approximately  13,000 and MO 127 has 650 vehicles per day at this intersection.  MoDOT  is in the conceptual design stage and is considering the best option for the traffic, location and health of the community to improve safety . One of those options, which has worked well in other locations along Highway 50 with similar accident types, is the J-Turn.

How will this project benefit me? 

This intersection has been on our statewide high severity list every year for the past four years. From the time period of 2013-2018 there have been 22 accidents at this location. One hundred percent  of those crashes involved either one or more residents within a 30-mile radius of this intersection (Green Ridge, Concordia, Sweet Springs, Holden, Knob Noster, Warrensburg, Sedalia). Of those crashes:

  • 18 of the accidents were right angle accidents
  • 17 of 22 (over 75%) crashes occurred during October to April (non-lake season)
  • 15 of the 18 right angle crashes took place on a weekday
  • 9 of the accidents involved LaMonte residents

J-turns have proven success

J-turn intersections have been shown to reduce right angle crashes. There are several studies about the effectiveness of this alternate including this one through the University of Missouri-Columbia that found total crashes have decreased by 25%; fatal crashes have decreased by 88%; serious injury crashes have decreased by 78% and right-angle crashes have decreased by 88%.

In our district,  J-turns were used on Highway 50 and Route 58 three years ago, a similar intersection that had 31 crashes from 2010 to 2014. Since J-turns were installed in 2015, there have been 6 total crashes (no fatal or disabling injuries), which is a 77% overall crash reduction.   

J-turns were also used on Highway 50 and MO 131 in 2017. Since the installation of the J-turn, there have been 3 total crashes (all rear ends, no fatal or disabling injuries), which is a 75% overall crash reduction

How will this impact traffic?

Most of the Highway 50 construction activities will be built under a single lane closures during non-peak hours , however there will be times where sections of MO 127 will be closed for short periods of time.

What is the time line  and cost for this project?  

This project is in the conceptual stage of design.  As of now this project is scheduled to be constructed in the summer of 2022.The project cost is estimated at $2 million and is funded with state and federal funds.
