Project Summary
The Missouri Department of Transportation is designing a project to realign U.S. Route 36 and improve the intersection of U.S. Route 36 and Route B (Grant Street) near Wheeling to reduce crashes. The project will include:
- Realigning westbound U.S. Route 36 to straighten the existing curve.
- Reducing Wheeling Cemetery access to one improved entrance off the westbound U.S. Route 36.
- Installing 10-foot shoulders.
- Grading the median banks to reduce the slope, eliminating the need for guardrail.
- Updating drainage.
Project Progress
MoDOT is designing a project to improve the intersection of U.S. Route 36 and Route B in Wheeling. The project includes removing guardrail to improve clear zones, realigning curves, and creating a standard 10 ft. shoulder, to reduce crashes at the intersection.
This phase includes project design, determining traffic control and public outreach.
A public meeting will be held in Chillicothe on Wednesday, July 22, from 4-6 p.m. at the Home of Sliced Bread Welcome Center (100 Elm Street, Chillicothe, MO 64601) to discuss upcoming intersection improvement projects on Livingston County U.S. Route 36 at both Mitchell Avenue (Chillicothe) and Route B (Wheeling). No formal presentation will be made.
If you are unable to attend the open-house meetings, two other opportunities for public comment are available through Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026.

Contractors may submit competitive bids during MoDOT's scheduled lettings. This project is scheduled to be in the February 2027 letting. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission will consider all submitted bids at its scheduled monthly meeting in March 2027.
After the project is awarded, MoDOT will work with the contractor to determine a construction schedule.
