Districts Impacted
What is the current situation?
As part of regular maintenance, the section of Route H (Riverview) from Hall Street to just north of Interstate 270 is due for some significant work, starting in early 2027. Utility crews will be removing abandoned utility access points and then making repairs. Crews will be removing the top layer of asphalt along the corridor and replacing it, as well as replacing signals at the St. Louis Riverfront Trail crossing.
What are the impacts?
People can expect a full closure of portions of Route H during the utility work. Only a portion of the roadway will be closed in one direction at a time for up to 72 hours and traffic will be rerouted around the work. In addition, people who use the corridor can expect periodic one way lane closures with detours during resurfacing, during the day, and daytime lane closures when crews are working on the signals.
Will emergency services be affected?
No, emergency services will be able to cross through any closed portions of the roadway to respond to incidents or medical emergencies.
Were the safety improvements along Route H, completed in 2020, effective?
Yes, MoDOT saw a significant decrease in the numbers of vehicles speeding, including those traveling more than 25 mph over the posted speed limit. Fatal and serious injury crashes significantly decreased in the time period studied after the safety improvements on Riverview were completed. Project timeline
After the project has been designed, it goes out for bids and is awarded to the contractor with the lowest qualified bid.
One of the first tasks is relocating some utilities along the corridor and repairing portions of the roadway where the pavement has deteriorated. Sections of the roadway will be closed in one direction so crews can remove abandoned utility access points and make repairs to the pavement. Traffic will be detoured around these closures. This will take place in spring 2027.
The second portion of work on this project includes periodic lane closures for paving work and replacing the signals at the St. Louis Riverfront Trail crossings. Lane closures for signal work will be mostly during the day. Sections of the roadway will be closed in one direction at night for resurfacing. Traffic will be detoured around these closures.
Construction is expected to be complete in late fall 2027.
