Project Summary
The Missouri Route 5 bridge over Sulphur Creek in Howard County, south of New Franklin, is deteriorating and in need of repair. The structure was built in 1926, and the deck (driving surface) is in poor condition. MoDOT is planning to repair and resurface the aging deck to increase the expected life expectancy of the bridge.
Project Progress
A project to replace the bridge deck is currently being designed by the Missouri Department of Transportation. The estimated total cost for this work, including engineering and construction, is $457,000. This cost may change.
The project is currently scheduled to be part of MoDOT's October 2025 letting when contractors may submit competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission may award the contract as part of their November 2025 meeting and, if the contract is awarded at that time, a notice to proceed date will also be given. That is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.
This project is being let in combination with U.S. Route 40 and Missouri Route 5 Intersection Improvements in Howard County | Missouri Department of Transportation and a project that will resurface and add shoulders on Missouri Route 124 from Route 240 (Howard County) to Route B (Boone County) and resurface 2.3 miles of Boone County Route BB near Rocheport and nearly 2.7 miles of Route CC west of Sturgeon.
At this time, construction is anticipated to begin as early as spring 2026 and be complete by Dec. 1, 2026. The roadway is expected to remain open during construction, but one lane will be closed at a time with a temporary signal directing traffic.
