Districts Impacted
What is the current situation?
The Missouri Department of Transportation has a couple projects scheduled for Olive Boulevard (Missouri Route 340) east of I-270 in St. Louis County staring in 2025.
In 2025, the department will make some pedestrian improvements and resurface the section of Route 340 between I-270 and Dielman Industrial Drive(just west of I-170). In 2026, the department is planning to make some updates to sidewalks and additional pedestrian improvements along Route 340 between I-270 and the end of MoDOT maintenance (near Ferguson Avenue). Along this corridor, there will be some sections of sidewalk that get connected, where it is practical and where it makes sense. When the sidewalk work between I-270 and Ferguson Avenue is complete, the section of Route 340 between I-170 and Ferguson will be resurfaced.
What improvements are being made?
Portions of an additional project in the area will update sidewalk and pedestrian crossings within the corridor to meet Americans with Disabilities act requirements. This will typically include new sidewalk, and updated pedestrian signals at crossings.
Recently completed work
Recently, residents and commuters may have noticed some updates in the corridor completed as part of a district-wide safety improvement project. In portions of the corridor, crews placed a raised concrete bump along the centerline of the roadway. This bump helps improve the safety, especially for pedestrians, by encouraging drivers to make left turns at slower speeds. This helps the driver better see pedestrians crossing the roadway.
What are the impacts from the project?
For the most part, impacts during the construction should be relatively minimal.
Sections of sidewalks will be closed for periods as crews work on the updates. Drivers can also expect one lane closed in either during non-peak traffic hours while signals and sidewalks are updated.
Business owners with multiple driveways will have at least one access point into their business at all times through construction. Crews will work on half of the access point at a time when there is only one entrance/exit from a business. Residential driveways are too small to complete half at a time – driveways will need to be closed for several days when they are being worked on. We anticipate that the contractor will be able to share a general timeframe when they anticipate being in the area -- probably about a week or two in advance.
Are bike facilities included in this project?
Since traffic volumes along Olive Boulevard along this stretch are fairly high, Olive will remain signed to remind drivers to share the road with cyclists.
