Frequently Asked Questions:
Will there be any road closures during this project?
No. Kansas Expressway (Route 13) is expected to remain open during construction. Drivers should anticipate lane width reductions and occasional overnight lane closures as work progresses.
Why is the roadway being widened?
Traffic volumes on Kansas Expressway (Route 13) between Grand Street and Sunshine Street (Route 413) have outgrown the capacity of the existing four-lane roadway. Expanding the corridor to six lanes will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for all users.
How will the project improve safety?
The project will improve safety by widening Kansas Expressway (Route 13) to six lanes, intersection improvements at Grand Street, and converting Catalpa Street to a three-quarter access intersection. These improvements will reduce congestion, minimize vehicle conflict points, and improve traffic operations, creating a safer corridor for all users.
Will there be pedestrian accommodations as a part of this project?
Yes. The project includes a new 5-foot sidewalk along the east side of Kansas Expressway (Route 13) from Grand Street to Elfindale Street, filling a gap in the existing pedestrian network. A multi-use path at the Grand Street intersection will also improve trail connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
Will any property need to be acquired for this project?
No. Permanent property acquisition is not anticipated as part of the project. Temporary construction easements will be required in some locations to accommodate grading and construction activities.
Why are left turns onto Route 13 from Catalpa being eliminated?
As traffic volumes increase on Kansas Expressway (Route 13) and the roadway is expanded to six lanes, access management becomes increasingly important to maintaining safety and efficient traffic operations. Converting Catalpa Street to a three-quarter access intersection eliminates left-turn conflicts across multiple lanes of traffic, reducing crash potential while improving traffic flow along the corridor.
