Why is MoDOT undertaking this project?
Due to deteriorating conditions, a project is planned to replace following three Northwest Missouri bridges in 2023. The project will bring the bridges up to current standards and improve the driving surface. The two bridges in Atchison County are expected to remain open until construction begins, but the bridge on Gentry County YY was closed on January 5, 2023, for structural deterioration.

Project Timeline
MoDOT contracted with consultants Burns & McDonnell, to design the new bridges for the Atchison County Route 46 Little Tarkio Creek Bridge, Atchison County Route 111 Pike Creek Drainage Ditch Bridge and Gentry County Route YY Bear Creek Bridge.
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the Gentry County Route YY Bear Creek Bridge project to Gene Haile Excavating, Inc.
The Atchison County Missouri Route 46 Little Tarkio Creek Bridge and Atchison County Missouri Route 111 Pike Creek Drainage Ditch Bridge were awarded to North Central Bridge, LLC.
Construction on the Gentry County Route YY Bear Creek Bridge began on Monday, Dec. 4. The project is anticipated to be complete by August 2024.
Construction on the Atchison County Missouri Route 46 Little Tarkio Creek Bridge is scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 12. The Atchison County Missouri Route 111 Pike Creek Drainage Ditch Bridge replacement will begin following the completion of the Little Tarkio Creek Bridge.

Yes, all of the routes will close at the bridge during construction.
What is the planned detour?
A signed detour will be in place during the construction on Route 46 directing motorists to use U.S. Route 59, U.S. Route 136 and Route N.
Will MoDOT need to acquire any right of way?
No, MoDOT did not need to acquire any temporary or permanent right of way for the Little Tarkio Creek Bridge or the Bear Creek Bridge. MoDOT did acquire a temporary easement for the relocation of a driveway near the Pike Creek Drainage Ditch Bridge.
