Districts Impacted
Public meeting information shared here is the same as the information shared on the I-64 bridge replacement over Vandeventer project page.
What is the current situation?
As part of the recommendations developed at the end of Future 64 study, one of the improvements on the interstate was updating the interchange at I-64 and Grand. This portion of the project leads into several highly trafficked areas, including the Grand Arts District and St. Louis University. Grand also carries a node for public transportation, with the heavily traveled #70 Grand Metrobus route connecting directly to the Grand Metrolink station. Adjusting connections to the interstate in this area meets several desires shared by the public for the project, including reducing the barrier effect of the interstate and improving access to public transit.
This work is currently projected to be completed at the same time as the bridge replacement work on Interstate 64 over Vandeventer, just to the west of Grand, set to start in late 2027. Since eastbound I-64 closes between Boyle and Compton for nearly a year as part of the plans to replace the eastbound bridge, and traffic will be detoured onto city streets, it is the perfect time to do this work without creating a greater impact to the traveling public.
What will be included in this project?
- Improve traffic flow between the eastbound interstate and Grand Boulevard, Bernard Street, Spruce Street and S. Teresa Avenue by realigning the intersection with Grand, Bernard and Spruce to connect to a roundabout.
- Widening the Compton bridge over Interstate 64 to add additional bike accommodations.
- Wider sidewalks throughout the eastbound Interstate 64 and Grand interchange
- New segment of the Brickline Greeway between Grand and Compton
What partners are participating in this project?
One of the core tenets of the Future 64 study was that much of the work that was outside of the interstate right of way would be designed, funded and completed by other transportation partners in the region.
In this case, the path for Great Rivers Greenway’s Brickline project runs through the heart of the project at Grand and is planned to be completed during the on-going construction to help minimize the impact to all road users and to complete the project effectively and efficiently.
Will access from Compton to westbound I-64 be removed?
The Compton ramp to westbound I-64 will not be removed as a part of this project. However, the Midtown region of St. Louis is vibrant and growing. Based on the current traffic projections in this area, MoDOT expects that the existing westbound ramps will not serve this area well beyond 2035. Planning work will begin within a few years to engage with the public and stakeholders again to look for solutions for this area that serve all the visitors and residents well.
What improvements are being made for cyclists or pedestrians?
This project completes about 40 percent of the overall plan between Grand and Compton. Though we recently scaled back work to the westbound ramps in this area, the current project still includes most of the bike/ped accommodations that were planned for this area. Wider sidewalks on the south side of the interstate between Grand and Compton connect bikes and peds on grade to the Metrolink station. MoDOT and Great Rivers Greenway will be constructing a segment of the Brickline Greenway on the north side of the interstate from the newly constructed Market Street line, along Forest Park Avenue to Grand. One addition was made to the project since the westbound ramps were adjusted to include widening the Compton bridge over I-64 to provide an additional 2-way bike crossing over the interstate.
During the Future 64 study process, MoDOT did stress that all work may not happen at one time but would be completed as funding and final design was determined.
What is Future64?
In 2023, MoDOT completed an 18-month-long Planning and Environmental Linkages study to look at how potential future projects might impact the environment, community and connectivity in the area. The department took the three proposals shared with the public and determined which parts of those three proposals work best together to best meet the needs and desires of the community. Some of the elements in the final conceptual plan are not on MoDOT-maintained roadway, so the department continues to work with partners to determine how some portions of the plan may be funded and scheduled. That final recommendation was shared with the public in November 2024.
