Project Summary
The Phelps County Interstate 44 eastbound bridge over the Little Piney Creek was built in 1966 and the last major rehabilitation was in 2008. While the supporting structures are in good condition, the shoulders need to be replaced, and repairs need to be made to the bridge’s deck and substructure.
Project Progress
The Missouri Department of Transportation and its consultant have designed new shoulders and deck repairs to extend the functional life of the bridge.
The project was part of MoDOT’s January 2025 letting when contractors submitted competitive bids. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the $847,000 project to N.B. West Contracting Company at their February meeting. The notice to proceed date is March 10, 2025. This is the earliest date the contractor may begin work.
Eastbound Interstate 44 over the Little Piney Creek and BNSF Railway will remain open during construction. The current plan is to stage construction, so that only one half of the bridge is closed at a time, with merge lanes directing traffic before the bridge. At this time, construction is anticipated to be completed by Dec. 1, 2025. Once construction begins, the contractor will have 55 calendar days to complete the project. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2025, but the start date and exact schedule of work are yet to be determined.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why is MoDOT repairing the bridge deck?
The Phelps County I-44 bridge over the Little Piney Creek was built in 1966 and was last rehabilitated in 2008. While the supporting structures are in good condition, the shoulders need to be replaced, and the driving surface (bridge deck) and substructure need repairs.
How will the construction affect traffic?
The contractor will stage construction so that one lane will remain open. Traffic control devices will be installed before the bridge to guide motorists through the construction work zone. During construction, delays should be expected at the bridge.
