MoDOT KC gears up for Work Zone Awareness Week

LEE’S SUMMIT – On February 13, 2019, three MoDOT KC District workers came dangerously close to losing their lives while on the job. They were parked on the shoulder of Interstate 670 around 11 p.m. where they were taking part in a routine quality assurance test on highway signs. Suddenly, their truck was struck from behind by a motorist travelling at a fairly high rate of speed. Their truck was damaged beyond repair and all three MoDOT workers required medical evaluations. Thankfully, they were not seriously injured.

Between 2014 and 2018, 54 people were killed and 3,248 people were injured in work zone crashes in Missouri.

These incidents highlight the importance of National Work Zone Awareness Week, which takes place April 8-12. This campaign is a reminder to all motorists to slow down and avoid distractions when driving through work zones. MoDOT also advises motorists to observe warning signs and merge before reaching lane closures. And beware of changing traffic conditions.

To help drive home the importance of Work Zone Awareness Week, MoDOT has changed the lights on the Christopher S. Bond Bridge over the Missouri River to bright orange. MoDOT is also encouraging everyone to wear orange during the week.
