Memorial Day Traffic Delays Expected Through Jefferson City

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – As the holiday weekend comes to an end and travelers find their way home, the Missouri Department of Transportation is advising motorists heading north on U.S. Route 54 to plan some extra time into their schedule for traffic delays.

MoDOT says that northbound traffic has historically backed up south of the Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City, as well as at the Route 70 interchange at Kingdom City on Memorial Day.

It is unknown how long delays will last, but the addition of flooding as well as visible damage from last week’s storms in Jefferson City is likely to cause motorists to slow down as they travel through the area.

“While it is natural for drivers to want to see the extent of the storm damage and flooding in the Jefferson City area, it is important that every driver focus on the road ahead,” says MoDOT Central District Engineer David Silvester. “The very last thing we want is for someone’s weekend to have a negative or tragic ending.”

Silvester says there are still many closed roads across the state, including Route 94 in Callaway County. Travelers are advised to check the MoDOT Traveler Information Map and plan their route accordingly.

Motorists can also find a running list of all closed roads in the Central District and other flooding information at modot.org/central-district-flooding-information, or by calling 1-888-ASK-MoDOT (275-6636).
