MoDOT Continues Storm Debris Cleanup Along State Highways

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – As mid-Missouri continues to evaluate and recover from the tornados and severe weather that moved through the area last week, the Missouri Department of Transportation turns its attention to the picking up of debris that made its way to state maintained routes.

MoDOT will be focused on picking up all materials that made it to these roadways naturally during the storm, such as trees, branches, brush, building insulation, siding and roofing material. However, officials say they discourage area residents and businesses from moving debris onto highway right-of-way for removal.

“Primarily we are wanting to keep people safe, and moving trash and debris onto a busy road can create a dangerous situation,” says MoDOT Central District Engineer David Silvester. “The safest way for people to get rid of debris is to take advantage of the designated disposal options coordinated by local governments and recovery groups.”

Silvester added that there is no set deadline for having all the debris picked up, but that it will be an ongoing effort throughout the next several weeks as flooding continues throughout the area as well.
