HANNIBAL – Signs indicating a weight limit of 25 tons for single-unit vehicles will soon be installed for a bridge on Route UU over BNSF Railroad in Macon County, near Callao.
The new load posting came about during the department’s bridge inspection process to analyze load limitations, which have been updated per Federal Highway Administration guidance.
The bridge is rated as poor and was built in 1947. The new weight limit will be in place until the bridge is replaced. A project for the replacement of this structure is included in Missouri’s FY 2026-2030 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program, with construction to tentatively begin as early as 2028/2029.
Previously, there was no posted load limit on this single-lane bridge. The single-lane condition will remain until the bridge is replaced. Approximately 160 vehicles travel across the structure each day.
