Work to replace I-70 culvert at Sallees Creek wrapping up this week

Outer roads to remain closed

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Interstate 70 traffic west of Kingdom City will return to the normal lanes of travel this week, thanks to significant progress on a large culvert replacement at Sallees Creek. Both outer roads will remain closed.

Currently, both directions of I-70 are shifted onto the outer roads – eastbound onto the South Outer Road and westbound onto the North Outer Road. This has enabled construction crews working with the Missouri Department of Transportation to replace a large culvert under I-70 at Sallees Creek.

While I-70 traffic is expected to shift back onto the normal lanes of travel overnight Nov. 18, both outer roads will remain closed for additional work. The North Outer Road is expected to remain closed through February 2026 for the replacement of the box culvert under the outer road. The South Outer Road, where the culvert was replaced earlier this year, is expected to reopen in the coming weeks after pavement work associated with the temporary bypass.

All work is weather-permitting and schedules are subject to change.

This work is part of the first project in MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program, Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City, which will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between Columbia) and Kingdom City. This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements to the I-70 interchanges at U.S. Route 63 and U.S. Route 54.

Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and governor provides, $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
