MoDOT to host public meeting on July 10 regarding replacement of U.S. 71 bridges over Bannister Rd.

A public meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. on July 10 at the South Kansas City Chamber Office.

JACKSON COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will host a public meeting regarding the replacement of the U.S. 71 bridges over Bannister Rd. (MO Route W). The public meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 at the South Kansas City Chamber Office, located at 1300 E 94th St, Kansas City, MO 64131.

While safe, the U.S. 71 bridges over Bannister Rd. have reached the end of their service life and need to be replaced. Improvements include the extension of a third lane on U.S. 71 across the new bridges over Bannister Rd. ending just south of the Hickman Mills Drive interchange/87th Street. The project will also improve pedestrian safety and connectivity along Bannister Rd. under U.S. 71. Construction will begin in Spring of 2026 and be completed by Spring 2027. This project will include the closure of Bannister Rd. under U.S. 71.

U.S. 71 will remain open during construction with alternative traffic patterns in place. The public meeting will include more information about the project including potential detours. Construction will take place during the World Cup 2026 to minimize future traffic impacts due to the 10-month closure of I-70 in 2027 as part of the Improve I-70 KC project.

Please note that this is an open house-style meeting, and no formal presentations will be made. Those interested can attend the meeting anytime between the advertised hours to ask questions, learn more about the project, and leave comments. There will also be an option to leave comments online, beginning at 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 10 until 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 24. The online comment period will be available on the project webpage.

For those unable to attend the meeting or access the project information online, project materials are available by request at the MoDOT district office located at 600 NE Colbern Rd. in Lee’s Summit, MO. Customers may contact Project Manager Thankam Mathew at thankam.mathew@modot.mo.gov.
