Head-to-head traffic on U.S. Route 63 to extend north of I-70 starting next week

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Rehabilitation work on the northbound U.S. Route 63 bridge over Interstate 70 is set to get underway next week. This work will require extending the single-lane, head-to-head traffic configuration on U.S. Route 63 in Columbia.

The existing work zone, which briefly narrows U.S. Route 63 to one lane in each direction, is currently between the Broadway overpass and the Conley Road underpass. Starting June 25, all through traffic on U.S. Route 63 between Broadway (south of I-70) and Vandiver Drive (north of I-70) will be shifted onto the southbound lanes and narrowed to one lane in each direction in a head-to-head configuration.

Those who travel this area frequently, particularly southbound motorists, will see little change as entering and exiting the work zone will remain the same. However, northbound motorists continuing north on U.S. Route 63 will need to remain in the left lane between the Broadway overpass and the Conley underpass. The right lane will change to exit only to the I-70/U.S. Route 63 connector.

All exit and entrance ramps for U.S. Route 63 are expected to remain open.

All work is weather dependent, and subject to change.

This is part of the first phase of the work to reconstruct the I-70/U.S. Route 63 interchange, which is one portion of the first project within MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program. Missouri’s FY2024 budget, approved through the state legislative process and governor, provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
