Delayed: Route 59 and Alabama Street postponed to April 29 due to utility work

Route 59 and Alabama Street intersection improvement project in St. Joseph

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Continued utility work on Route 752 (Alabama Street) has delayed the start date of the U.S. Route 59 and Alabama Street intersection improvement project to Tuesday, April 29. The project contractor, Amino Brothers Co., Inc., working with the Missouri Department of Transportation, is unable to begin construction until the utility work is completed.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has contracted Amino Brothers Co., Inc. to realign roadways and driveways, and add turn lanes, sidewalks, and storm drainage in five construction stages. This work will improve sight distance, improve tractor-trailer turning movements, and increase capacity for vehicles stopped at the Route U railroad crossing.

Stage 1 will begin on Alabama Street (Route 752) between Route 59 and Sherman Street. This stage will realign Alabama Street on the east side of Route 59. It will also create right turn lanes to and from Route 59 to Alabama Street. To view a graphic of Stage 1, click here.

Traffic Impacts: During Stage 1, Alabama Street between Route 59 and Sherman Street will be closed. Access to Lake Avenue and Brown Street will also be closed. Motorists will need to seek an alternate route.

Crews are scheduled to work Monday-Friday during daylight hours. Stage 1 is anticipated to be completed by mid-August 2025. Details for Stage 2 will be shared ahead of a staging change.
