ST. CHARLES COUNTY – Drivers traveling on the Route 79 bridge at Interstate 70 can expect detours, shifted lanes and possible delays during a bridge rehabilitation project starting at 9 a.m., Monday, August 5. All work is weather permitting.
In total, three bridges on Route 79 will be rehabilitated during multiple stages.
- Stage 1 restricts southbound 79 to 2 lanes across the bridge over I-70 and closes both lanes of northbound 79. Motorists will be detoured to continue east on I-70 to the Mid Rivers Mall Drive exit and turn around, continue westbound on I-70, and exit at Route 79. This closure is expected to remain until mid-October.
- Also, during stage 1, both northbound and southbound 79 will be restricted to one lane on the bridges over E. Terra and the Norfolk Southern Railroad. During this work, the northbound Route 79 on ramp will be closed from the North Service Road. Motorists traveling eastbound on East Terra Lane and the North Service Road can follow detour signs to eastbound I-70 to Mid Rivers Mall Drive, exit and turn around on westbound I-70 to access northbound Route 79.
- The second stage involves restricting the Route 79 bridge over I-70 to 2 northbound lanes and 1 southbound lane. During this closure, the southbound Route 79 on ramp from East Terra Lane will be closed. Motorists can either continue on the North Service Road to northbound Route 79 and exit at Salt River Road to southbound Route 79 or motorists can continue on East Terra Lane to T.R. Hughes Boulevard. During this work, crews will work on the inside northbound and southbound lanes and the shoulder of the Route 79 bridge over the railroad bridge to the north. The ramp from the North Service Road to northbound Route 79 will open and the entrance road from East Terra Lane to southbound Route 79 will close.
All work is expected to be completed December 2024. This work is part of an I-70 bridge rehabilitation program of 12 bridges along Interstate 70 in St. Charles County: https://www.modot.org/70-bridge-rehabilitation-st-charles
