BOONE COUNTY – Construction on the first project within MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program (Columbia to Kingdom City) is set to begin on Monday, July 8. Crews will begin work on Interstate 70 between Callaway County Route J/Millersburg mile marker 137 and Callaway County Route M/Hatton mile marker 144. For the next few weeks, motorists can expect to see various nightly single-lane closures in this area of I-70 in each direction, Mondays through Saturdays. Lane closures will begin at 7 p.m. each evening and continue until approximately 6 a.m. the next morning.
Crews will be completing the operations below beginning in the westbound direction, followed by eastbound:
- Shoulder strengthening.
- Milling and striping.
- Barrier wall installation.
Some work zones will be set up with coned off lanes and other work will use truck/trailer-mounted attenuators in a slow-moving operation. Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention in work zones. Buckle Up. Phone Down.
This work is part of the first project within MoDOT’s Statewide Improve I-70 Program, Improve I-70: Columbia to Kingdom City, which will add a third lane of travel in each direction to the 20-mile stretch of I-70 between U.S. Route 63 (Columbia) and U.S. Route 54 (Kingdom City). This $405 million fixed-cost contract includes new pavement on all three lanes of I-70 and will also make interchange improvements to the I-70 interchanges at Route 63 and Route 54. Construction is scheduled for completion in late 2027.
Missouri’s FY2024 budget from the General Assembly signed into law by Gov. Mike Parson provides $2.8 billion in General Revenue for the costs to build a third lane of I-70 across the state. The program will plan, design, construct, reconstruct, rehabilitate, and add a third lane in each direction on nearly 200 miles of I-70, from Blue Springs to Wentzville.
