JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The pavement rehabilitation and reconstruction on Interstate 44 between Rolla and St. James has reached another milestone. The new concrete pavement on the approximately 4 miles from U.S. Route 63 in Rolla (Exit 186) and just east of Route V (Exit 189) has gained strength and overnight lane closures this week will remove the concrete barrier.
Each night this week, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., the eastbound right lane between Exit 186 and Route 68/8 in St. James (Exit 195) will close as crews remove the barrier, diamond grind and clean where the barrier had been placed, and stripe the roadway.
This will restrict access at the following eastbound exits:
- Exit 186 – no access to eastbound I-44; ramp from eastbound I-44 open.
- Exit 189 – no access to or from eastbound I-44.
- Exit 195 – no access from eastbound I-44; ramp to eastbound I-44 open.
All westbound exits in this area are expected to remain open.
With traffic driving on the new pavement, the right-hand, outside shoulder will close so crews may safely install guardrail in this section. To close the shoulder, channelizers will be placed where the barrier was in this 4-mile section.
Guard cable installation will also begin in the median.
All work is weather permitting, and schedules are subject to change.
