U.S. Route 54 to remain open during bridge rehabilitation project

Traffic to narrow to one lane in each direction for 0.6 miles

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Transportation and its contractor, Concrete Strategies, LLC, are working to secure the necessary clearances to begin the rehabilitation of two overpass bridges along a vital corridor in Jefferson City. Once the go-ahead is received from partners, traffic on a 0.6-mile section of U.S. Route 54 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction, south of the Missouri River bridges, over McCarty Street and U.S. Route 50.

The work will be conducted within 90 days and split into two phases – westbound bridge rehabilitation, then eastbound bridge rehabilitation. While ramp availability is subject to change, all ramps to/from U.S. Route 54 are expected to remain open during the first phase. Some ramp closures will be necessary during the eastbound bridge rehabilitation in the second phase. Both phases will be completed within 90 calendar days, or the contractor may incur liquidated damages. There are incentives built into the contract if they’re able to complete both phases earlier.

Using crossovers just south of the Missouri River Bridges and just north of Missouri Boulevard, traffic will be narrowed to one lane each direction, in a head-to-head configuration with a temporary concrete barrier and speed reduction through the work zone.

“We ask drivers to please slow down, stay in your lane and follow the signs and message boards as you navigate the work zone,” said Resident Engineer Chris Brownell. “For those who will be traveling this route daily, consider planning extra travel time and avoiding peak hours, when you can.”

MoDOT has contracted with Concrete Strategies, LLC to perform bridge joint and deck repairs, then place a new thin concrete overlay.

This stretch of Route 54 carries more than 31,000 vehicles on an average day. Significant delays are expected in both directions during weekday morning and evening rush.
