HANNIBAL – The Missouri Department of Transportation has extended the closure of Route U in Warren County after a slide in the roadway worsened. The route was initially closed May 9 between Lake Ridge Lane and Rodgers Drive, approximately 1.25 miles north of Missouri Route 94.
“Unstable soil conditions and increased rainfall continue to cause movement of the soil and further roadway damage,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Jeff Niemeyer. “Therefore, the road will remain closed for the foreseeable future until we can determine the next step toward a viable solution. We ask onlookers to please avoid the vicinity and do not enter beyond the road closed barricades.”
This area has unique features underground that require study by geotechnical engineers to ensure the repair of the slide and road are safe and permanent. While a definite time frame for the closure has not been determined, it is expected to be several months before the road can reopen. The preferred detour around the closure is to use Missouri Route 94 to Missouri Route 47.
The project to repair this location is currently included in the scoping section of the approved 2024-2028 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
