JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has added information to the project’s webpage and has extended the comment period on proposed improvements to the intersection of Missouri Route 87 and Moniteau County Route C. Public input can now be submitted through Feb. 27, 2024, via email, traditional mail, or an online form.
Community input began on Feb. 1, 2024, with an open-house style public meeting where the project team answered questions, provided information, and received input about the project and the preliminary design. Following the public meeting, the team developed additional displays showcasing the size of the proposed roundabout and how large vehicles are projected to navigate the non-signalized intersection. The current intersection of Route 87 and Route C has a long history of fatal and serious injury crashes that have continued despite the implementation of several traffic control safety measures. MoDOT has installed multiple safety measures – ranging from additional signs and flashers to improving the sight distance at the intersection – that have not been effective in reducing crashes. In the past five years, the intersection has seen one crash that resulted in two fatalities, one crash that caused serious injuries, and 12 additional crashes with minor or no injuries.
After evaluating several options, data points to a roundabout as the best solution to meet the needs and goals of the project.
At this stage in the design progress, MoDOT is seeking community input on the planned improvements. By commenting, questioning, and providing community insight, the public’s input is essential in helping to guide the design and construction process.
There are multiple ways interested parties can provide input through Feb. 27, 2024:
- Online – The exhibits from the in-person meeting and the newly developed materials are available at a webpage dedicated to the project at www.modot.org/missouri-route-87-and-route-c-intersection-improvements-moniteau-county. While there, comments may be submitted via an online form.
- By email – Send your comments to CDCR@modot.mo.gov with the subject line: Moniteau County Intersection Improvement Project.
