UPDATE: I-229 Double-Decker Bridge closure

Double-Decker Bridge to close from Highland Avenue to U.S. Route 36 beginning next week

St. Joseph, Mo. – The Interstate 229 Double-Decker Bridge in St. Joseph will be closed from Highland Avenue to U.S. Route 36, including all on/off ramps, beginning Monday morning, Aug. 7. Crews from the Missouri Department of Transportation had planned to close the bridge later this month for regularly scheduled maintenance, but have accelerated this work due to the current closure on the bridge for repairs.

On Friday, July 28, the northbound lanes of I-229 between the Edmond and Francis Street ramps were closed due to a pavement blow up. Today, Tuesday, Aug. 1, crews also closed the southbound lanes between the Felix and Charles Street ramps and the U.S. Route 59 (St. Joseph Avenue) ramp to southbound I-229 to begin repairs on the damaged section of northbound I-229.

In an effort to reduce the overall closure time of the bridge, crews have moved forward the yearly bridge closure for maintenance which was scheduled to begin Aug. 14. During the closure, crews will complete pavement repairs and assess signage, lighting, and crash barrels.

During the closure, motorists will need to seek an alternate route. A reopening date has not yet been determined. All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change.
