MoDOT to demonstrate safety options along stretch of Page Blvd. TODAY

ST. LOUIS – Area residents and drivers traveling along Route D (on Page Boulevard and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive) in the city of St. Louis can experience and provide feedback on potential safety improvements along the route.

The department and its local partners, will hold a safety demonstration on Page Boulevard between Belt Avenue and Arlington Avenue in front of Better Family Life (5415 Page Boulevard TODAY from 2-6 p.m.. The demonstration may be delayed, or cut short, due to weather.

MoDOT engineers and their partners will be available during the demonstration to discus the project and potential improvements.

Residents and commuters can drive, walk or bike through potential safety improvements to the corridor and share their experiences with the project team - either in person, or through the website below. The following safety features will be temporarily in place on the roadway: a reduction in vehicle travel lanes, pedestrian refuge islands, a temporary center median and curb extensions and bump outs.

“We’re really looking forward to giving our residents and commuters an opportunity to physically experience how various safety features might work, and to get their feedback on the impact of the different options before anything gets drawn up in our plans. Although this has been done on several other roads in the St. Louis region, this is one of the first times we have had a temporary safety demonstration on a state-maintained roadway,” said Jen Wade, P.E., MoDOT area engineer in the city of St. Louis.

This demonstration is part of the Route D Road Safety Audit which is identifying safety improvements to be included when Route D is resurfaced in 2026. The corridor included in that safety audit extends almost six miles: along Page Boulevard between Skinker Boulevard on the west to Dr. Martin Luther King Drive, then along Dr. Martin Luther King Drive to Tucker Boulevard to the east. This stretch has a crash rate that is six times the statewide crash rate for similar roadways.  In the five years between 2017 and 2021, there were a total of 1,696 crashes including 10 fatal crashes and 53 serious injury crashes.  Four of the fatal crashes and 10 of the serious injury crashes involved pedestrians.

More information about the audit and paving work is available here: Route D resurfacing and safety project | Missouri Department of Transportation (modot.org) The latest information on the demonstration may be found on the website, or MoDOT St. Louis’ Facebook, Instagram or Twitter social media channels.
