Crews open 3rd Street at Broadway, plan to close 4th Street this afternoon May 30

JACKSON AND CLAY COUNTIES – Crews with the Buck O’Neil Bridge project have opened the newly aligned 3rd Street below Broadway Blvd. (U.S. 169/Buck O’Neil Bridge) as of Tuesday morning, May 30. This afternoon, crews will permanently close 4th Street between Washington St. and Broadway Blvd. Additionally, the portion of Broadway Blvd. under the Buck O’Neil Bridge that runs up to 5th Street will also permanently close. These closures are part of the Buck O’Neil Bridge replacement and motorists will need to utilize 3rd Street (which runs just north of 4th Street) going forward. All work is weather permitting.

The current Buck O’Neil Memorial Bridge is a triple arch bridge carrying U.S. Route 169 over the Missouri River, and serves as a key regional connection between downtown Kansas City and communities north of the river. While safe, the bridge is nearing the end of its projected service life.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
