UPDATE: I-29 northbound to switch lanes, southbound to reopen

Buchanan and Andrew County pavement improvement project

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – Beginning Wednesday, May 31, motorists traveling on Buchanan County Interstate 29 can expect a lane change at the Missouri Route 6 (Fredrick Boulevard) Bridge in St. Joseph. Crews from Herzog Contracting Corp., contracted by the Missouri Department of Transportation, plan to switch the northbound traffic from the outside driving lane to the inside passing lane from Gene Field Road to Route YY (Mitchell Avenue).

Crews anticipate reopening both southbound lanes of I-29 on Thursday, June 1. Construction below the Fredrick Boulevard Bridge, including I-29 northbound, is tentatively scheduled to be complete mid-July. An updated project schedule is shown below:

Now through mid-July:

Concrete replacement under Missouri Route 6 (Frederick Boulevard) Bridge. Motorists should expect delays.

  • All work will be completed during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday. The work zone will extend north and southbound from Gene Field Road to Route YY (Mitchell Avenue).
  • May 31-mid-July: Northbound I-29 will be switched to the inside passing lane to complete concrete replacement. Traffic will be narrowed to one lane around-the-clock. Outside driving lane will be closed.
  • June 1: Southbound I-29 will reopen.

Early April through late August:

Guardrail and median cable improvements and roadway patching from south of Business Route 71 (Andrew County) to south of Route O (Buchanan County).

  • All work will be completed overnight from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., Sunday through Friday. Intermittent lane closures will occur.

Mid-July through late October:

Resurfacing from south of Business Route 71 (Andrew County) to south of Route O (Buchanan County).

  • All work will be completed overnight from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sunday through Friday. Intermittent lane closures will occur.
  • Intermittent, overnight closures of the on/off ramps for resurfacing at the intersections of U.S. Route 169 (Exit 50), Frederick Boulevard (Exit 47), U.S. Route 36 (46 A/B), U.S. Route 69 (Exit 44) and I-229 (Exit 43). More information on the ramp closure schedule will be provided as information becomes available.

An 11.6-foot width restriction will be in place for all project work zones.
