Expect Lane Closures, Traffic Delays on Route 96/MNA RR Bridges in Carthage Beginning May 15

Jasper County – Drivers should expect lane closures and traffic delays when contractor crews begin work to replace the bridge deck/driving surface on the Missouri Route 96/Missouri & Northern Arkansas Railroad bridges in Carthage beginning the week of May 15, the Missouri Department of Transportation said.

Contractor crews will remove the bridge deck/driving surface and replace it with a new latex concrete surface in the east- and westbound lanes.

The bridges are located between Jasper County Road 162 and I-49 in Carthage.

Traffic impacts:

  • One lane of Route 96 will be CLOSED at a time in each direction
  • Eastbound speed limit will be reduced to 60 mph and westbound speed limit will be reduced to 46 mph through the work zone
  • Drivers may experience traffic delays and are encouraged to find alternate routes
  • Motor carriers traffic should seek alternate routes due to lane width restrictions
  • No signed detours
  • Signs and message boards will alert drivers approaching the work zone
  • Check MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map for road closings/traffic impacts

Weather and/or scheduling conflicts could alter the work schedule.

This contract includes replacing the bridge deck/driving surfaces on two bridges on I-49 over the MNA Railroad in Nevada. That work was completed in 2022.

Project information:

  • Prime contractor: Emery Sapp & Sons, Columbia
  • Total project cost: $2 million
