National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) Webinars

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), an annual spring campaign held at the start of construction season, encourages safe driving through highway work zones. The key message encourages drivers to use extra caution in work zones. The 2023 NWZAW will be held April 17-21. Please note that the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) will host the 2023 NWZAW kickoff event on April 18th at the new I-70 westbound bridge over the Missouri River near Rocheport. For more about NWZAW visit: https://www.nwzaw.org.

In partnership with MoDOT and FHWA, Missouri Division, we are offering 3 webinars to spread awareness on work zone safety.  Join us to learn more and bring attention to the risks of work zones by attending any or all of the sessions.  See session descriptions and links to register below.

Webinar 2 – Safer Work Zones Through Technology, April 19th, 11:00am-12:30pm

Praveen Edara and Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, University of Missouri, will discuss smart work zone technologies increasingly being used by state DOTs to enhance safety. They will first present an overview of DOT practices for smart work zone technologies from a recently completed NCHRP Synthesis. They will then provide an update on the University of Missouri’s research on the following three new work zone technologies: 1) work zone data exchange (WZDx) specification that enables DOTs and LPAs to share work zone data with drivers and third-party users, 2) enhancing worker safety through advance technologies on truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs) - automated detection/warning and driver-less TMA, and 3) use of virtual reality (VR) technology to train staff that set up, inspect, and review work zones.

Webinar 3 – MO LTAP Work Zone Training, April 20th, 11:00am-12:30pm

Dan Smith, Traffic Management and Operations Engineer, will address MoDOT’s requirements and recommendations for work zone qualification/certification. MO LTAP will then provide a brief overview of their work zone and flagger training as well as discuss how often LPAs usually offer the class to their workforce. MO LTAP will also summarize the value of the training and explain how to get training started in an agency. The session will conclude with a success story from an LPA that has offered LTAP’s work zone class and incorporated it into their job duties and changed their practices.
