ST. LOUIS – Drivers who use eastbound I-44 traveling near Route 66 State Park should consider alternate routes or be prepared for higher levels of congestion as crews close one eastbound lane around the clock beginning Saturday, March 25.
At 7 p.m. Saturday, March 25, crews will close two eastbound lanes on the interstate over the Meramec River near the Route 66 State Park to restripe the interstate to two lanes. This restriping work is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Sunday, March 26.
Starting at 7 p.m., Monday, March 27, crews will reduce eastbound I-44 to one lane for placement of temporary barrier wall in the work zone. The barrier wall work is expected to be completed by 5 a.m. Tuesday, March 28. When complete, eastbound I-44 at the Meramec River will have only two eastbound lanes open at this location until the end of the year.
One eastbound lane will be closed around the clock for continuing bridge rehabilitation work over the river through December.
“This work is to continue replacing joints on the bridge, as well as other routine preventative maintenance. We understand the impacts this work has, and encourage people to avoid the corridor, if possible, during morning and evening rush period. We encourage people who regularly use this corridor, if they can, to telecommute, adjust their travel hours or use alternate routes to travel east during the work,” said Ryan Pearcy, MoDOT area engineer for southwest St. Louis County.
This interstate closure was originally scheduled to occur starting Monday, March 20 but was postponed due to the forecast of inclement weather.
