ST. LOUIS – Drivers on Interstate 55 heading into or leaving the city of St. Louis should be prepared for increased congestion as crews prepare for the next stage of work on bridges on I-55.
This project replaces or renovates 13 interstate bridges in both directions between Interstate 44 in the city of St. Louis and Lindbergh.
Monday, March 6, starting at 9 a.m., crews will close one additional northbound lane, for a total of two closed lanes, on I-55 between Bates and Arsenal. They will remain closed around the clock through fall 2023.
Tuesday, March 7, starting at 9 a.m. crews will close two southbound lanes between Gravois and Bates. That means that southbound drivers will have two southbound lanes from Gravois to Bayless.
Crews will close a third northbound lane overnight, between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, March 7; Wednesday, March 8, Thursday, March 9 and Friday, March 10, to set barrier wall for the eventual shift of southbound traffic to the northbound lanes.
At this time, that expected traffic shift is anticipated for the week of March 13, when the ramp from Arsenal to southbound I-55 will also close. More details will be released when they have been determined.
“We understand that this work is very impactful for drivers heading into and leaving the city. We do appreciate their patience as we continue to maintain the bridges along the I-55 corridor to ensure that they remain safe and operational for the foreseeable future. Just like last year, we encourage those people who are able to telecommute, adjust their travel times to outside of rush periods, or use alternate routes, to do so. We know that not every commuter will be able to help, but those who can will make travel through this corridor easier for everyone,” said Jen Wade, MoDOT area engineer for the city of St. Louis.
All work is weather permitting.
All stages of the project are expected to conclude in early 2025.
