MEDIA ADVISORY: Work Zone Awareness Week 2022

Kick-Off Event Planned for Joplin April 12

JOPLIN – As the busy road work season gets underway across Missouri, the Missouri Department of Transportation kicks off the 2022 Work Zone Awareness Week (April 11-15) with events planned in Joplin, April 12.

This year MoDOT will be joined by partners in law enforcement, cities and counties to help kick off this important week. Field employees will share their stories of working alongside the traveling public, and the close calls they’ve experienced.

Joplin Kick-Off Event:

  • 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12
  • Joplin Welcome Center, Eastbound I-44, mile marker 2, Joplin, 64804
  • Speakers: MoDOT Southwest District Engineer Steve Campbell, Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper Sam Carpenter, along with MoDOT field employees, and City of Joplin Public Works representatives

In 2021, 17 people died in work zones on Missouri roadways. Since 2000, 34 MoDOT employees have been killed in the line of duty, 16 of them taking place in work zones.

Media partners will have an opportunity to take photos/film of work zone vehicles and signage before and after the media event. All speakers will be available for individual interviews regarding work zone safety directly following the scheduled media event.
