Weather delays closure of Interstate 229 north of St. Joseph Avenue

Ramp at U.S. Route 36 and Interstate 229 will also close

St. Joseph, Mo. – The starting date for a project to rehabilitate several bridges and ramps has been postponed again due to weather. The project is now scheduled to begin March 16 with the full closure of Interstate 229, both directions, between U.S. Route 59 (St. Joseph Avenue) and Highland Avenue. The ramps at St. Joseph Avenue and the southbound off-ramp and northbound on-ramp at Highland Avenue will remain open.

This section of the interstate between mile marker 6.4 and mile marker 7.4 is scheduled to remain closed through April 2022 to rehabilitate the bridges over Poulin Street and the bridges over the ramps to and from St. Joseph Avenue. During the closure motorists will be directed over a detour on I-29 and U.S. Route 36.

As part of this bridge rehabilitation project, the ramp from eastbound U.S. Route 36 to southbound I-229 will also close March 16 – 30. Motorists will need to seek an alternate route.

A tentative schedule for the closure of several other ramps included in the project is as follows:

  • I-229 Entrance/Exit ramps at Francis Street and Felix Street (Northbound Exit 6A): May 2 – 11
  • I-229 Entrance/Exit ramps at Charles Street and Edmond Street (Southbound Exit 6A): May 12 – 20
  • I-229 Entrance/Exit ramps at Route 759 (Southbound Exit 5): May 23 – June 3
    • Southbound Exit 5 will be closed. Traffic wanting to go west on U.S. Route 36 or onto Route 759 will need to find an alternate route.
  • Faraon Street over I-29: June 6 – 9

All work is weather-permitting, and schedules are subject to change.
