ST. LOUIS – Drivers on westbound I-44 heading south into downtown St. Louis should be aware of lane closures and shifts this week, ending with the I-70 express lanes closing Friday. All work is weather dependent.
The lane shifts and closure are part of the work to reconstruct the Broadway bridge over I-44 and the ramp from the express lanes to Broadway.
Crews are expected to reopen the express lanes that have been closed for the past month by 8 a.m. Thursday March 3.
Crews will close the ramp from westbound (southbound) I-44 to Broadway (Exit 292B) and the right lane of westbound (southbound) I-44 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, March 4.
They will again close the ramp and the right lane of westbound (southbound) from 9 a.m. Monday, March 7 until 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 9.
These closures will allow the crews to work on the shoulder and narrow and shift the two lanes of westbound (southbound) I-44 to the right. During that time, the express lanes from I-70 to downtown will remain open.
Crews will close the express lanes Friday, March 11, after morning rush. The lanes will remain closed while crews construct the new ramp from the express lanes to Broadway. That work is expected to continue through August 2023. Although drivers will not have the express lanes, there will be two narrowed and shifted lanes on westbound (southbound) I-44 into downtown.
The southbound lanes of Broadway over I-44 will remain closed through spring of 2023. Drivers can use Cass and Tucker to detour around the bridge closure.
