Buck O'Neil Bridge replacement project continues to make progress

CLAY/JACKSON COUNTIES – The Missouri Department of Transportation and its partners continue to make progress on the Buck O’Neil Bridge replacement project. The following information is a list of where the project stands.

 

Construction Update:

Crews continue drilled shaft work on the Missouri River (barge) and at the corner of 4th and Beardsley (drilled shafts will eventually become piers/columns where the new bridge will rest)

Crews continue work on the new ramps at the north end of the downtown airport (grading work is underway and paving of the ramps start in a few weeks)

Utility relocations and adjustments are underway throughout the project limits

                       

Building Demolition:

Crews have successfully completed the demolition of three buildings near the current Buck O’Neil Bridge

Demolition includes the MTC Building (5th & Broadway) and the Lee Matthews Building (4th & Broadway) and another location just north of the Lee Matthews building

These locations will eventually become home to bridge piers/columns for the new bridge

Demolition of several other buildings should start in the next few weeks

 

Interesting/Miscellaneous:

The Design/Build team continues to meet with local KC artists to collaborate on the aesthetics of the park/landing area

Archaeologists are sifting through sections of 4th & Broadway (formerly Lee Matthews Building)

Archaeologists will eventually make their way to 5th & Broadway (formerly MTC Building)

 

Future Closures: 

There are no current plans for closing any additional ramps or lanes in the area this year

Additional project closures will happen in early 2022
