Traffic Alert: Expect multiple lane closures as part of NE 53rd Bridge project

CLAY COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation will make the following traffic changes as part of a project to replace the NE 53rd Terrace Bridge over I-435 in Clay County.

Crews will close the outside lane of both northbound and southbound I-435 between 48th and 69 Highway from 7am until 5pm, Tuesday, September 21 and again Wednesday, September 22 for the installation of overhang forms and metal decking forms.

Crews will close the inside two lanes of both northbound and southbound I-435 between 48th and 69 Highway from 9pm, Thursday, September 23 until 5am, Friday, September 24 for the installation of overhang forms and metal decking forms.

This work has the potential to impact Kansas City traffic greatly. Motorists are encouraged to plan accordingly. All work is weather dependent.

Crews are replacing the old bridge, which was built in 1969 and had reached its projected service life. The new bridge will include two, 12-foot lanes with four-foot shoulders and a six-foot sidewalk on the south side of the bridge. This project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2021.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
