ST. LOUIS – Drivers using I-64 to head into or out of the city of St. Louis or Illinois or using westbound I-44 near I-270 should consider alternate routes as crews will close portions of I-64 and I-44 this weekend.
Crews will close I-64 between I-44/I-55 and Grand in the city of St. Louis to set girders for the Ewing bridge and the new 22nd Street bridge over the interstate – work that was rescheduled from earlier in the month. In addition, westbound I-44 at I-270 will close again this weekend to replace a girder removed during the July 16-19 on the I-270 bridge over westbound I-44. All work is weather dependent.
Crews will start closing ramps in both directions of I-64 between Grand and I-44 starting at 6:30 p.m, Friday, July 23, including the ramps from Broadway, 10th Street and 14th Street. Crews will start closing lanes in both directions of I-64 at 7 p.m., with all lanes being closed by 8 p.m. for the girder placement. Detour routes for the closure will be marked. Eastbound drivers will use Market/Bernard, Jefferson, Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard, Tucker and I-70 to detour. Westbound drivers will use I-44, Jefferson and Market as detours.
Interstate lanes as well as entrance and exit ramps, including the Market Street exit (Exit 34B) are scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, July 12. The single eastbound and westbound I-64 lanes that are currently closed, will remain closed after this weekend.
Drivers should consider Interstate 44 or Interstate 70 to get to the city or Illinois. They may consider Interstate 270 or Interstate 255, as well, to get to Illinois.
At I-44, crews will close all westbound interstate lanes under I-270, by 8 p.m., Friday, July 23. In addition, the ramps from northbound I-270 to westbound I-44 and westbound Route 366 (Watson Road) to westbound I-44 close by 8 p.m. Friday July 23. To get back to westbound I-44, drivers will have to follow I-270 northbound to Dougherty Ferry and take southbound I-270 to the westbound I-44 ramp. Again, most of the westbound I-44 lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, July 26.
