Groundbreaking ceremony set for the construction of the new US 169 (Broadway) Buck O’Neil Bridge
CLAY/JACKSON COUNTIES – The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Buck O’Neil/US 169 Missouri River Bridge is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 23, in the parking lot of the TWA Museum at Kansas City’s Wheeler Downtown Airport.
The ceremony will feature speakers including Governor Mike Parson, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, Jackson County Executive Frank White, Northland Regional Chamber Ed Ford, Missouri Highways and Transportation Commissioner Gregg Smith, MoDOT Director Patrick McKenna and others.
In February of 2021, the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission selected Massman-Clark, A Joint Venture as the design-build contractor to replace the current Buck O’Neil Bridge.
The new Missouri River Bridge will cost close to $220 million dollars to construct and will provide a safe, connective and accessible transportation facility that improves regional and local system performance. The Massman-Clarkson team includes the following firms: Massman Co., Clarkson Construction Co. and HNTB Corporation- all of Kansas City.
The John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge is a triple arch bridge carrying U.S. Route 169 over the Missouri River, and serves as a key regional connection between downtown Kansas City and communities north of the river. While safe, the bridge is nearing the end of its projected service life. Opened in 1956, the bridges sees close to 50,000 vehicles, daily.
