St. Joseph, Mo. – The asphalt paving phase of the resurfacing project on Interstate 229 was to begin today, Friday, May 14, but the contractor has pushed that work back to begin Monday, May 17. One lane will be closed around the paving operation, which is expected to continue for the next three to four weeks.
The contractor will now begin paving in the northbound passing lane, Monday, May 17. Previously it had been announced that paving would begin at the north end of the project and progress south, which would require the closing of the ramp from southbound U.S. Route 71 to southbound I-229 and the ramp from northbound I-29 to southbound I-229 (Exit 56B). Those closures have been postponed. New dates for those closures have not yet been determined.
Crews will continue to work, alternating between northbound driving and passing lanes, then move to repeat the process in the southbound lanes. During this asphalt paving process, brief ramp closures may be necessary. If possible, advance notice of all ramp closures will be provided.
One lane in each direction of I-229 will remain open during the work and a 10-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project. Crews will work during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday.
The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the $5,599,536.83 resurfacing project to Herzog Contracting Corp., of St. Joseph. The project extends from the U.S. Route 71 intersection in Andrew County to Route 371 (22nd Street) in Buchanan County and is expected to continue through September.
