Asphalt paving on Interstate 229 to begin Friday

Two ramp closures at the north end of Interstate 229 also planned for Friday

St. Joseph, Mo. – The resurfacing project on Interstate 229 moves into the asphalt paving phase beginning Friday, May 14. One lane will be closed around the paving operation, which is expected to continue for the next three to four weeks.

The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission awarded the $5,599,536.83 resurfacing project to Herzog Contracting Corp., of St. Joseph. The project extends from the U.S. Route 71 intersection in Andrew County to Route 371 (22nd Street) in Buchanan County and is expected to continue through September.

Beginning Friday morning, weather permitting, the contractor plans to begin paving at the north end of the project in the southbound passing lane. As part of Friday’s work, crews will also close the ramp from southbound U.S. Route 71 to southbound I-229 and the ramp from northbound I-29 to southbound I-229 (Exit 56B). Both ramps will close from 6 a.m. to noon.

They will complete the southbound passing lane then move to the northbound passing lane. After both passing lanes are complete, they’ll pave the driving lanes in the same order.

One lane in each direction of I-229 will remain open during the work and a 10-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project. Crews will work during daylight hours, Monday through Saturday.
