Commission Awarded Sealing and Resurfacing Projects for Routes in Macon and Randolph Counties

MACON – The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission recently awarded a contract to Capital Paving and Construction, LLC, of Columbia, Missouri, for projects in Macon and Randolph Counties in the amount of $3,579,261.50. The projects are as follows:

U.S. Route 24 – resurface from 1.5 miles west of Randolph County Route C to 0.9 mile east of U.S. Route 63 near Moberly, the total length of improvement being 8.647 miles.

Route C (Macon/Randolph) – chip seal from 0.4 mile south of U.S. Route 36 to Randolph County Route JJ in Huntsville, the total length of improvement being 23.36 miles.

Randolph County Route A – chip seal from Business 63 in Moberly to Randolph County Route B junction near Higbee, the total length of improvement being 9.592 miles.

Randolph County Route EE – resurface from just east of U.S. 53 to end of state maintenance near Moberly, the total length of improvement being 4.719 miles.

Randolph County Route B – chip seal from U.S. 63 near Clark to Missouri Route 3 near Roanoke in Howard County, the total length of improvement being 18.278 miles.

“The resurfacing project on U.S. 24 will involve some mill and fill along with an overlay, while the resurface on Route EE will be a 1-inch overlay,” said MoDOT Area Engineer Brian Untiedt. “The remaining projects include sealing the pavement and crews applying liquid asphalt that helps seal off any cracks that may be in the road, and then will apply small aggregate rock,” he added.

A chip seal can be accomplished without closing a road; however, it is extremely important drivers significantly reduce their speed during and immediately after the operation.  Excess rock is swept away by crews shortly after the operation is complete.  Typically, within a few days, the rock has either been embedded into the oil or removed from the surface.  The purpose of this operation is to keep a road in its same condition by infusing it with oil.

Traffic will be reduced to one lane through the work zones while the work is completed. The work could begin as early as this spring and should be completed before this fall.

“A more specific schedule on these projects will be shared after the contractor provides the plan for completing the work,” Untiedt added.
