HANNIBAL – Drivers in Marion County on U.S. 24/61 will soon see additional activity as preparations are in place to begin work on an intersection safety improvement project located at U.S. 24/61 and Route F in Marion County just south of Palmyra.
“This project will be completed in multiple phases with work beginning Monday, June 15,” said Missouri Department of Transportation Area Engineer Brian Untiedt. “The initial phase includes building the new median crossover, posing minimal impacts to traffic as work will take place within the median,” Untiedt explained.
In late June, work will shift to the construction of the deceleration lane on U.S. 24/61 that will allow right turns onto Route F. This work includes a lane closure for southbound traffic on U.S. 24/61. “This phase is expected to be complete in mid-July at which time it will be necessary to close the intersection at U.S. 24/61 at Route F for about five days to join Route F and the new entrance at U.S.24/61,” Untiedt explained. Changeable message signs and static signs will be in place at least one week prior to closure to alert motorists, as schedule changes may occur based on weather. There will be truck traffic entering and exiting the highway for the duration of the project. MoDOT urges motorists to use caution when encountering work crews, slow down and pay attention when traveling through work zones.
The contract in the amount of $6,997,608 was awarded earlier this year to Emery Sapp & Sons, Inc. of Columbia, Missouri also includes two resurfacing projects, which began earlier this year, located at:
- S. Route 61 resurfacing south of Route F to Missouri Route 168
- S. Route 24 resurfacing from U.S. Route 61 to U.S. Route 36
