TOMORROW: Updated Schedule for 140th St. over I-49 Bridge Demolition (May 8-11)

JACKSON COUNTY– The Missouri Department of Transportation is replacing the 140th St. bridge over I-49 in Grandview, MO that will require the CLOSURE of the 140th St. bridge over I-49 beginning Tuesday, May 5. The demolition of the bridge will begin at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday, May 8 until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.  During that time, I-49 below 140th St. will be CLOSED. Motorists will be routed off and back on to I-49 at the 140th St. via the on and off ramps. All work is weather permitting.

  • Friday, May 8 – Early Morning Monday, May 11
    • Beginning shortly after noon on Friday, May 8, through 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11, crews will CLOSE the left lane of southbound Frontage Rd. (the I-49 outer road) between Main St. and 140th St. They will also CLOSE northbound Frontage Rd. (I-49 outer road) between MO Route 150 and 140th St. This is to allow diverted traffic from I-49 to merge without additional traffic or interruption during the demolition.
    • This demolition will require the CLOSURE of I-49 in both directions at 140th St. starting at 6 p.m. Motorists will be routed off and back on to I-49 at the 140th St. via the on and off ramps.
    • Crews will begin the bridge demolition at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday, May 8 until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.
  • Monday, May 11 – Friday, May 15
    • Beginning on Monday, May 11, until Friday, May 15, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, crews will CLOSE the left lane of southbound I-49 at 140th St. for foundation work in the median
    • Beginning on Monday, May 11, until Thursday, May 14, from 6 p.m. each evening until 5 a.m. the following mornings, crews will CLOSE the right lane of northbound I-49 at 140th St. for shoulder grading.
    • Beginning Wednesday, May 13, through Friday, May 15, from 6 p.m. each evening until 5 a.m. the following mornings, crews will close the right lane of southbound I-49 at 140th St. for shoulder grading.

       

During construction, 140th Street over I-49 will be closed. All local traffic will be detoured. Signed detours will be provided using the outer roads, and available cross streets:

  • Westbound 140th St. traffic will be routed north on the East Outer Road to cross I-49 at Main St. and then back to 140th St. via the West Outer Road. 
  • Eastbound 140th St. traffic will be routed south on the West Outer Road to MO Route 150, then back to 140th St. via White Ave and the East Outer Road. I-49 will remain open with the exception of a few weekends for the demolition of the bridge and setting of girders. Additionally, there will be lane restrictions on I-49 for the construction of retaining walls and end bents. The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2020.

This bridge is included in Governor Mike Parson’s $351 million Focus on Bridges Program, which will repair or replace 250 bridges across the state.

Motorists are reminded to slow down and pay attention while driving in work zones. Not all work zones look alike. Work zones can be moving operations, such as striping, patching or mowing. They can also be short term, temporary lane closures to make quick repairs or remove debris from the roadway.
